5 Surprising Benefits of a Tummy Tuck

Anyone who has heard of tummy tuck surgery is likely familiar with its body shaping benefits: a firmer midsection, flatter stomach, and slimmer silhouette. However, a tummy tuck provides a number of other functional benefits in addition to the obvious cosmetic perks. Keep reading to discover 5 of these lesser-known advantages!

#1. Exercise becomes easier

Many of my patients who have tummy tuck surgery are bothered by excess, sagging skin around their midsection. This may be due to many different factors, including dramatic weight loss, aging, or having children. Sometimes, the extra folds of skin are so significant that they can interfere with certain exercises and make working out difficult and even painful. By removing this excess skin, you’ll be able to enjoy physical activities without chafing. Your abdominal muscles will also be tighter and firmer, which helps your exercises seem easier as well.

#2. It’s easier to maintain weight loss.

It’s not uncommon for men and women who have tummy tuck surgery to start new, healthy habits after their procedure. That’s because they are motivated to keep the weight off and maintain their new results. Of course, having a tummy tuck doesn’t mean that you don’t have to work for weight loss. It’s still important to eat right, exercise, and live a healthy lifestyle. However, you may find that your new shape gives you the confidence you need to stay focused and keep up the good work.

#3. Urinary incontinence may be improved.

A tummy tuck is known for tightening the abdominal wall and creating a flatter stomach. But a tummy tuck can also tighten tissues that support the bladder, pelvic floor, and urethra. This tightening is especially important for women who have had children because childbearing often causes incontinence after giving birth. A tummy tuck can sometimes help improve or reverse this condition and prevent unwanted leaking.

#4. Back pain may decrease and posture can improve.

Recent research has shown that a tummy tuck can significantly improve back pain. That’s because the muscles that are tightened during tummy tuck surgery are the same muscles responsible for your core strength. By strengthening these muscles, you may experience reduced back pain and improved posture.

#5. You may experience relief from hernias.

Abdominal hernias refer to a condition where the internal organs bulge through a tear in the muscle. Although they are not usually dangerous, abdominal hernias can cause discomfort or pain, and in some cases can result in serious complications. The only way to repair an abdominal hernia is with surgery, and a tummy tuck can often be combined with hernia repair to accomplish this. The type, size, location, and number of hernias present will determine whether or not a tummy tuck will offer relief.
