5 Questions To Ask During a Tummy Tuck Consultation

Houston woman considering the questions to ask during her tummy tuck consultation

So, you’ve made the exciting decision to get a tummy tuck—congratulations! One of the first steps in the process is your consultation. This appointment is extremely important because you will discuss your surgical plan with your doctor and have the opportunity to ask questions or express any concerns you might have.

During a tummy tuck consultation at my Houston plastic surgery center, I try to be as thorough and helpful as possible. It’s always a good idea, however, to come to your consultation prepared with questions. Below are 5 questions to ask your surgeon regarding this transformative procedure.

#1. Am I a good candidate for a tummy tuck?

Most people come in for consultation with an idea of what procedure they want. However, sometimes that procedure does not exactly fit their needs. It is important that your surgeon does a thorough evaluation of your body before creating a treatment plan. The best candidates for a tummy tuck:

  • Are unhappy with the appearance of excess skin around their midsection.
  • Want to address a protruding abdomen and/or muscle laxity that is unresponsive to a good diet and exercise.
  • Do not smoke.
  • Are in good overall health.

Some people find they only need a mini tummy tuck to achieve their desired results. Learn more about this tummy tuck variation in this related blog post.

If a tummy tuck doesn’t end up being the best option for you, we also offer liposuction, EvolveX Tite, Tone, and Transform, and other body contouring treatments. We’ll discuss your specific aesthetic goals and create a treatment plan that is right for you. In fact, we may even combine treatments and procedures for optimal results.

#2. Can I see before-and-after photos of your tummy tuck patients?

Looking at before-and-after photos is a great way to get a better idea of what your results may look like. It is important that you like what you see, feel comfortable with your surgeon, and trust that he or she will do a good job. You are making a big investment in yourself, so you want the most qualified surgeon available.

#3. Will I have noticeable scarring after my tummy tuck?

The scars for a tummy tuck are inside the bellybutton and below the waistline. I position the incisions so that they can be covered by a low-cut bikini bottom. Additionally, I take special care while closing the incision, so it will heal to be as thin as a hairline and barely noticeable. It is important to closely follow post-op instructions for caring for your scar.

#4. How much will my tummy tuck cost?

The cost of a tummy tuck ranges from $9,000 to $13,000. Try not to be swayed too much by price. Typically, if the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. On the other hand, astronomically higher prices do not ensure quality care either. The most important thing is to find a surgeon with an impressive resume, years of experience, and beautiful before-and-after photos. After discussing your goals and the results you hope to achieve, I can give you a more accurate idea of the costs involved.

#5. What should I expect for my tummy tuck recovery?

Patients usually take about a week off from work after a tummy tuck. You will need some help around the house initially, especially if you have small children or pets. I expect all my patients to walk around their homes at least a handful of times each day, starting the first day after surgery. This is good for circulation and will help you get back to your normal daily routine sooner.

Make sure to gradually increase the amount of physical activity each day. It’s important to listen to your body as overexerting yourself too soon can compromise your results

    • Team Cash says:

Depends on whether or not the patient has unwanted fat in those areas. Liposuction is separate from a tummy tuck so often patients will add upper/lower abdomen, flanks, and bra-line liposuction to their surgical plan to get the results they are seeking. After meeting for a consultation, I am able to give my patients recommendations and further discuss what outcomes can be expected. Thank you for your question Jeanne!

Depending on your type of job, 1 to 3 weeks off from work is recommended to allow your body to heal properly.
