How Far Is Too Far With Dermal Fillers?

How Far Is Too Far With Dermal Fillers in Houston?

Dermal fillers are one of our most requested med spa procedures—and for good reason. They are effective, nonsurgical, minimally invasive, and can make just the right amount of difference in the appearance of the face. Patients choose fillers like Restylane® and JUVÉDERM® at my Houston practice for a variety of reasons, from adding volume in the cheeks to recontouring the nose.

Since fillers are such efficient and accessible treatments, however, they can sometimes be a bit addictive. Overuse of these products leads to results that look less than natural and may be difficult to completely reverse.

How can you avoid becoming a filler junkie? Here are a few signs you’ve taken it too far.

Your face is starting to look overly puffy. “Pillow face” happens when the cheeks and under-eye area have been overfilled. We can all think of celebrities who obviously have too much filler in their faces and are losing their natural looks. A great way to keep an eye on your use is to take a photo of yourself before you get any fillers. If you start to look drastically different from that photo, it may be time to pump the brakes.

Your friends and family are giving you subtle hints. Only the boldest of friends will tell you to your face that you need to stop, but others might try to warn you more delicately. Comments like, “You look so different!” aren’t always compliments. If you want an honest opinion, ask for it. A trusted outside source may able to see your transformation from a different perspective.

You’re eager to experiment on injection areas that aren’t recommended by professionals. Most fillers have been approved by the FDA for use on specific parts of the body, but as people continue to experiment with these products, more and more treatment areas are being tried. If your injector is encouraging you to treat areas other professionals won’t, you need to walk away.

You are looking for fillers produced outside of the U.S. or are willing to travel abroad for cheaper treatment. The FDA has strict standards for the products it approves, which is why you should be wary of fillers produced outside of the U.S. that are not regulated. I also don’t recommend traveling to other countries, since you can’t be sure your treatment will be held to the same standards as it would be in the U.S. Even here, cheaper filler treatments aren’t worth the risk. Choosing a qualified, board-certified injector is a must.

While fillers can certainly be overused, they can also provide a range of benefits for patients who want a contouring boost or who are not quite ready to commit to a surgical procedure. For examples of dermal fillers done right, please visit our before-and-after photo gallery.
